Exiting the Huesera’s Cave - Guadalupe Salgado Partida

A white wolf howling with its head tilted back. The wolf if standing in a green forest.

the wolf runs from the cave, its feet

crackling like embers

the warmth of fur replaced by the crisp

coolness of the wind’s lips on human skin

wild, wed to no one, and on her two feet

running through the desert, laughing-

the woman is reborn like countless

others out the complete skeleton of a wolf

In the belly of the Sonoran desert, the Huesera

roams until she has every bone in place

and the skeletons of the past come to light
